Groundbreaking Tuesday for New SEVTC Residential Housing

What: The Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Services (DBHDS) and the Department of General Services (DGS) will break ground for new homes for residents at Southeastern Virginia Training Center (SEVTC). Construction of the new SEVTC residential housing is expected to be completed in September 2011.

When: Tuesday, June 15, 2010, 11 a.m.

Where: Southeastern Virginia Training Center, 2100 Steppingstone Square, Chesapeake, VA 23320

Who: The 2009 General Assembly allocated $24 million in capital funds and tasked the Department of General Services (DGS) to resize SEVTC, a DBHDS facility, to 75 beds. W.M. Jordan Company in Newport News will build 15 new 5-bed homes at SEVTC, designed by RRMM Architects in Chesapeake.

More: The 2009 General Assembly also allocated $8.4 million in capital funds to build 18 homes in integrated community settings in the Tidewater area for SEVTC residents. The 18 community homes will have a total of 90 beds and house five individuals each. The nine local community services boards will own and operate the new homes and will contribute up to $3.5 million towards the project. Construction will begin in August 2010 and is expected to be completed in September 2011.

SEVTC currently serves 138 individuals with intellectual disability and related developmental disabilities.

Available to citizens statewide, Virginia’s public mental health, intellectual disability and substance abuse services system is comprised of 40 community services boards (CSBs) and 16 state facilities. DBHDS seeks to promote dignity, choice, recovery, and the highest possible level of participation in work, relationships, and all aspects of community life for individuals with a mental illness, intellectual disability or a substance-use disorder.

The Department of General Services is a multifaceted state agency supporting the infrastructure of the Commonwealth’s government. As a service agency, DGS supports the mission of government, while also serving businesses and citizens by delivering quality, cost-effective, timely, safe and secure laboratory, engineering and architecture, procurement, real estate, vehicle management, and graphic design services.
