David Lyon named director at Eastern State
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: December 10, 2012
Richmond – Department of Behavioral Health and Development Services (DBHDS) Commissioner Jim Stewart announced David Lyon, most recently the director at Southern Virginia Mental Health Institute (SVMHI), starts a new position this week as the permanent director at Eastern State Hospital. The hospital’s current director, Jack Wood, is retiring at the end of the year. Lyon began his new position at Eastern State on December 10th, 2012.
“Throughout his time at SVMHI, Dave has demonstrated very effective leadership, has been a wise decision-maker and an excellent partner with community stakeholders,” said Commissioner Stewart. “I am confident Dave will further improve on the great work already started by the new executive team and capable staff at Eastern State.”
Lyon has been the director at SVMHI in Danville for the past ten years. Since May of 2012, Lyon served as the acting director at Northern Virginia Mental Health Institute in Fairfax and successfully guided that facility through its time of transition until the permanent director, James Newton, was recently named. While Lyon was stationed away from SVMHI, Assistant Director for Administration Robin Crews has been the acting director of the Danville facility. Crews will continue in her acting director role at SVMHI until a permanent director is found.
Commissioner Stewart continued, “I appreciate the staff at both Eastern State and SVMHI for their work serving adults with serious mental illness. Effective executive, administrative, support and clinical staff at both hospitals in recent years has helped ensure a brighter future for the individuals they serve.”
Eastern State Hospital is a 300-bed state mental health facility in Williamsburg, Virginia and SVMHI is a 72-bed state mental health facility in Danville, Virginia.
