Virginia Launches Supports Intensity Scale Pilot

In July and August of this year 83 case managers and program staff were trained as administrators of the Virginia version of the SIS (Supports Intensity Scale). The SIS was developed by AAMR and is a standardized assessment tool, specifically designed to measure the pattern and intensity of supports a person with developmental disabilities needs to be successful in the community. Virginia is one of 12 states and Canada that are early adopters of the SIS. The pilot runs through June 30th of 2007 and just fewer than 1000 individuals will be assessed over the year. There are 9 Community Services Board, one private provider, and Central Virginia Training Center which comprise the pilot sites.

The SIS has proven to be a valuable tool in team meetings and in person-centered planning for assessing the supports individuals needs to attain desired goals and outcomes. It promotes a shift in thinking which promotes more life impacting service plans. At the end of the pilot, recommendations will be made of how to improve the tool and its future use in Virginia.
