RICHMONDOn Friday, October 12, Governor Timothy M. Kaine congratulated Dr. Lynn De Lacy, director of Northern Virginia Mental Health Institute (NVMHI), for being named the 2007 Psychiatric Nurse of the Year by the American Psychiatric Nurses Association. The Nurse of the Year award represents the highest annual distinction given by the association.

Governor Timothy M. Kaine today congratulated Dr. Lynn De Lacy, director of Northern Virginia Mental Health Institute (NVMHI), for being named the 2007 Psychiatric Nurse of the Year by the American Psychiatric Nurses Association. The Nurse of the Year award represents the highest annual distinction given by the association.

“This is much-deserved recognition for Dr. De Lacy,” said Governor Kaine. “She is nationally recognized for her leadership in reducing seclusion and restraint of mental health patients and is highly respected locally for her leadership at Northern Virginia Mental Health Institute. As the Institute’s director of nursing for 20 years and its facility director for five years, Dr. De Lacy has helped improve the lives of countless individuals with mental illness in Virginia. I’m extremely grateful for her efforts.”

In 1983, Dr. De Lacy was named director of nursing of NVMHI, a state psychiatric facility in Falls Church. She became acting director in 2002 and director in 2004. Dr. De Lacy received a nursing degree from American University in 1981 and a Master’s degree in Psychiatric and Mental Health Nursing from MCV/VCU in 1983. While director of NVMHI, she completed doctoral studies and received a PhD from the George Mason University College of Nursing and Health Science.

Dr. De Lacy was recognized at the American Psychiatric Nurses Association’s annual national conference on October 5, 2007.
