Hawkins Appointed Director of Southside Virginia Training Center and Hiram Davis Medical Center
Richmond – The Department of Mental Health, Mental Retardation and Substance Abuse Services (DMHMRSAS) Commissioner James Reinhard, M.D., announced today that William “Bill” Hawkins has been named the facility director at Southside Virginia Training Center (SVTC) and Hiram Davis Medical Center (HDMC) in Petersburg, Virginia. Hawkins has been the acting facility director since September 2008.
“Over the past seven months, the individuals with intellectual disabilities served by the center and their families have gotten to know Mr. Hawkins as acting facility director and recognize his proven leadership and managerial ability,” said DMHMRSAS Commissioner James Reinhard, M.D. “Mr. Hawkins will continue to benefit the training center, the medical center, and surrounding community in his new official capacity as facility director.”
Prior to becoming acting facility director, Hawkins served as SVTC’s director of administration where he supported SVTC, as well as Central State Hospital and Hiram Davis Medical Center, with critical organizational functions such as financial services and management of day-to-day operational capabilities. Hawkins also worked for the Virginia Department of Taxation in various positions, including the assistant commissioner administration, and as an independent contractor.
Hawkins, of Richmond, holds a Master’s degree in business administration from Virginia Commonwealth University and an undergraduate degree in business administration from the University of Richmond.
SVTC/HDMC currently provides quality, medical, person-centered health and habilitation services for 335 individuals with intellectual disabilities on its Petersburg campus. SVTC/HCMC also provides administrative and environment of care services to other facilities on the Southside campus, including Central State Hospital. Operated by DMHMRSAS, SVTC is one of five state training centers for individuals with intellectual disabilities, and HDMC provides medical treatment to individuals at Virginia’s state-run mental health and intellectual disability facilities.
Effective July 1, 2009, DMHMRSAS will change its name to the Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Services.
Available to citizens statewide, Virginia’s public mental health, intellectual disability and substance abuse services system is comprised of 40 community services boards (CSBs) and 16 state facilities. DMHMRSAS seeks to promote dignity, choice, recovery, and the highest possible level of participation in work, relationships, and all aspects of community life for individuals with a mental illness, intellectual disability or a substance-use disorder.
