DMHMRSAS Joins Show of Support for UK

(Richmond) – From Hillsville to Fairfax, employees of Virginia’s Department of Mental Health, Mental Retardation, and Substance Abuse Services joined Governor Mark Warner Thursday in a show of support for the people of Great Britain. The Governor had called on Virginians to observe two minutes of silence at noon, in remembrance of the 52 citizens killed in subway and bus bomb blasts a week ago.

In Richmond, employees from Central Office joined hundreds of other state workers and everyday citizens at the Governor’s service at the Bell Tower on Capitol Square.

In Fairfax, at the Northern Virginia Training Center, workers were encouraged to bring clients with them for two minutes of silence at the flagpole near Building One. Others observed the silence with clients in their work areas, and explained why. Facility director Mark Diorio even set up a “Support Britain” card to be signed by employees and delivered to the British Embassy in Washington.

At the Southwest Virginia Training Center in Hillsville, Director Dale Woods called for a moment of silence at noon. Likewise, similar observances were held at the Piedmont Geriatric Hospital in Burkeville, the Commonwealth Center for Children and Adolescents in Staunton, and Southern Virginia Mental Health Institute in Danville.

“It’s very important that we stand with the people of the United Kingdom” Governor Warner said, standing in front of 3 flags….Virginia, the U.S., and the U.K. A book for Virginians to express their condolences will be available for signing at the gate to the Executive Mansion until 9 a.m. Monday.
