Mental Health First Aid Instructor Training

This is a 40 hour training that will be free to participants. This is a course that would normally be offered nationally for approximately $1800 per person. DBHDS is not responsible for lodging and travel costs of the participants.

Instructors are needed to embed this dynamic and powerful training locally. As an important member of our community, we believe you and your organization would be excellent partners in becoming trainers to teach others this much needed class in our area. We would like to invite you to participate.

Mental Health First Aid is an internationally recognized skills-based training much like a CPR or First Aid class that helps communities better understand mental illness and respond to psychiatric emergencies. The MHFA course provides basic education about mental health, prepares the attendee to be present with and assist people who are developing a mental health problem, or who are experiencing a crisis, through use of a 5-step action plan.

As a trained instructor, you will be prepared to deliver to future participants an 8-hour overview of mental health issues, signs and symptoms, and a model for delivering mental health first aid in crisis and non-crisis situations. Mental Health First Aid training is an interactive process based on adult learning styles and is very effective in fighting stigma, teaching helpful techniques and offering resources. MHFA course attendees that have benefitted from MHFA classes include: small and large employers, Human Resource directors, government officers, administrative staff, nurses, social services staff, health offices of all kinds, volunteer coordinators, faith- based communities, nursing home staff, lawyers, judges, as well as the general public. As an instructor, Mental Health First Aid offers you the flexibility to train according to your schedule and the schedule of your organization.

It is preferred that applicants for the Instructor training should have completed the 8 hour training prior to attending the Instructor training. Please contact Michael Olsen at for a copy of the application, or if you have any questions.
