Evidence Based Practices for Children and Youth with ASD

Evidence Based Practices Brief Components

Overview: A general description of the practice and how it can be used with learners with autism spectrum disorders.
Step-by-Step Directions for Implementation:
Explicit step-by-step directions detailing exactly how to implement a practice, based on the research articles identified in the evidence base.
Implementation Checklist:
The implementation checklist offers a way to document the degree to which practitioners are following the step-by-step directions for implementation, which are based on the research articled identified in the evidence base.
Evidence Base:
The list of references that demonstrate that the practice is efficacious and meets the National Professional Development Center’s criteria for being identified as an evidence-based practice. Some practices include supplemental materials such as data collection sheets.

2014 Starategies for Supporting Adolescents and Adults with Autism Spectrum Disorder - One Day Training


The Virginia Autism Resource Center
offers FREE Web-based informational sessions that provide an overview of different topics related to autism spectrum disorders through a video presentation, or Webcast. All Webcasts last approximately 45 to 60 minutes and are archived for viewing at a time that is convenient for you. Informational Webcasts are free of charge and can be accessed at any time by VARC registered users after login. Logins are for data collection purposes only.  Currently available trainings include:

Characteristics of the Autism Spectrum Disorders: Autism, Asperger's Syndrome, and Pervasive Developmental Disorder - Not Otherwise Specified: Autism spectrum disorders (ASD) represent a distinct category of developmental disabilities that share many of the same characteristics. Autism spectrum disorders affect an individual's ability to communicate, understand language, play, and relate to others. It is also associated with rigid routines and repetitive behaviors. The symptoms can occur in any combination and can range from very mild to quite severe. Autism Spectrum Disorders include Autism and the related disorders of Asperger Syndrome, and Pervasive Developmental Disorder - Not Otherwise Specified (PDD-NOS). (3 parts)

Characteristics of Asperger Syndrome: While each individual with Asperger Syndrome presents their own personal style, skills, knowledge, and abilities, there are collective characteristics shared among this group. At the heart of this disorder is impairment in social functioning. This includes difficulty understanding social rules, interacting with others, maintaining relationships, and communicating effectively. Asperger Syndrome is also characterized by the presence of restricted interests and activities which can impact social development and reduce independence. (3 parts)
